Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
